In Which Conditions Should We Store Fruits to Use Them Longer?

How Should Fruits Be Stored?

Fruits are among the first foods that spoil quickly if not stored under appropriate conditions. Although fruits with peels last longer, the durability of fruits without peels is short. Fruits without peels like grapes, cherries, sour cherries, strawberries, and apricots are fruits that start to spoil very quickly. To make fruits without peels last longer, it is better to store them without washing. Storing fruits in paper bags prevents moisture, thus delaying spoilage. Therefore, soft fruits without peels should be stored in paper bags or covered with paper towels.

Storing Fruits with Peels

Fruits with peels are more durable than soft fruits. Fruits with peels like melon, watermelon, apple, orange, tangerine, and pomegranate can last for two to three days even at room temperature. Cut fruits must be stored in the refrigerator. Storing fruits in cardboard boxes delays spoilage. Apples, melons, and bananas, known as fragrant fruits, should be stored openly, which can cause their smell to transfer to other food items. For this reason, fruits must be stored in closed boxes or in storage containers with lids suitable for storing fruits.
